NYC Office Shooting

source DALL-E
Gunman kills four, including NYPD officer, in Midtown offices: Shane D. Tamura, 27, opened fire with an M4-style rifle inside 345 Park Avenue, killing three civilians and an off-duty NYPD officer before fatally shooting himself. The victims included a Blackstone employee, a Rudin Management employee, and a lobby security guard. One additional person remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Shooter blamed the NFL and hinted at brain trauma: Tamura left a handwritten note alluding to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition tied to head trauma, and appeared to blame the NFL, which has offices in the building, for his condition. Though Tamura never played pro football, officials said he played in high school and had a documented history of mental illness.
A cross-country trip ends in tragedy: Driving from Las Vegas to New York, Tamura arrived Monday and mistakenly took the wrong elevator, narrowly missing the NFL floor. He opened fire in the lobby, moved to the 33rd floor, and ultimately died by suicide. Authorities recovered multiple firearms, ammunition, and prescription meds in his vehicle. Officials called the attack “despicable” and reignited calls for national gun reform.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

AI Unicorn Goes Big

Funding round led by Iconiq: Anthropic is in talks to raise between $3 billion and $5 billion in a new round led by Iconiq Capital that would value the AI startup at $170 billion. That’s nearly triple its $61.5 billion valuation from March, when it raised $3.5 billion in a round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Middle East money back on the table: CEO Dario Amodei appears to be reversing course on past concerns about taking funding from authoritarian governments. A leaked memo indicates that Anthropic now sees Gulf sovereign wealth as necessary to stay competitive in AI, despite prior warnings about soft power and national security risks. CNBC previously reported the company avoided Saudi funds.
Rivals follow similar paths: OpenAI, valued at around $300 billion, is also looking to the Middle East, working with G42 to build a large data center in Abu Dhabi and still seeking $30 billion as part of a $40 billion raise. The race for capital is intensifying as AI infrastructure costs continue to skyrocket.
