JetBlue Fined for Chronic Delays

🛫 Historic Penalty: The Department of Transportation fined JetBlue Airways (LUV) $2 million, its first fine for "chronically delayed flights." The fine targeted four routes that faced over 145 delays between June 2022 and November 2023, with JetBlue responsible for over 70% of the disruptions.

📉 Delays and Accountability: The DOT accused JetBlue of failing to adjust schedules for realistic flight times. While JetBlue's on-time rate improved to 71.3% in 2024 from 64.9% the year before, the airline pointed to outdated air traffic control systems and staffing shortages as key contributors to delays.

✈️ Reform and Compensation: The DOT credited JetBlue $1 million of the fine for compensating affected passengers with at least $75 in vouchers. The airline called on the U.S. government to modernize air traffic control and address chronic staffing issues to ensure reliable air travel.

Alcohol Stocks Tumble After Cancer Warning

🍷 Surgeon General’s Warning: US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy linked alcohol to cancer, calling it the third leading cause of preventable cancer after smoking and obesity. He proposed warning labels similar to those on cigarettes, sparking investor concerns.

📉 Market Impact: Alcohol stocks, including Constellation Brands (STZ), Molson Coors (TAP), Diageo, and Anheuser-Busch, dropped as much as 6% before partially rebounding. The uncertainty of policy follow-through under the incoming Trump administration tempered losses.

📊 Public Awareness Gap: Murthy’s report highlighted that less than half of Americans recognize alcohol as a cancer risk, despite its association with 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 deaths annually in the US. Warning labels haven’t been updated since 1988.
