Foreign Investors Flinch at Trump Tax

🔍 Fund managers warned Congress that Trump’s proposed Section 899 tax—designed to punish countries with “unfair taxes”—could accidentally scare off foreign investors from U.S. equities, leading to capital outflows and hurting American markets.

💸 The Investment Company Institute argued that the provision could slash returns for investors in Europe, Canada, and beyond by adding up to a 20% tax on top of existing levies, effectively making U.S. mutual funds and ETFs financial collateral damage.

📉 While some investors may rethink U.S. stocks, others say the low dividend yields of most American companies could cushion the impact—especially with capital gains and buybacks largely unaffected.

Troops, Tensions, and a Lawsuit

🔫 Trump authorized 2,000 more National Guard troops to L.A. following immigration protests, sparking backlash from Governor Newsom, who sued to block what he called an illegal power grab.

⚖️ Newsom and AG Rob Bonta argued Trump’s federalization of California’s Guard bypassed state authority and invoked emergency powers under false pretenses—namely, a “nonexistent invasion.”

📣 Meanwhile, Marines were mobilized, a union leader was arrested, and Trump doubled down by suggesting Newsom be arrested too, drawing sharp criticism from civil rights groups and lawmakers alike.
